Pimple on the Gum

Pimple on the Gum

Pimples on the mucosa is an important signal of the body and should not be treated as an acne on the skin. If a pimple has appeared on the gum – it should not be extruded or punctured on its own, because it can be fraught with serious consequences. Mucous membranes are a favorable environment for the life and reproduction of microorganisms: both normoflora, and pathogenic bacteria. Inflammation can develop into a pustule, the presence of which in the mouth is fraught with complications.

The problem must be shown to a doctor, who will determine the type of pimple and its causes. Depending on the specialist’s diagnosis, treatment may include rinses and gum treatment, or immediate surgical intervention.

Causes of Pimple on the Gum

Pimples on the gums of the teeth can be different: both small rashes, similar to acne, and large sacs with purulent contents (fistulas).

Common causes of their appearance are:

  • Lack of proper hygiene;
  • vitamin deficiencies due to improper diet;
  • Bad habits;
  • Weakened immunity due to diseases and long-term medications;
  • Allergies to food or hygiene products.
  • Viral diseases;
  • Diseases of the teeth and gums.

One of the viral diseases that cause pimples on the gum is herpes. During the course of stomatitis, aphthae – ulcers that can be mistaken for pimples – often appear. Rashes can also be a signal of advanced dental caries, periodontitis, periodontitis, and other pathologies, which in severe stages cause loosening and even loss of teeth. Large masses containing pus can indicate chronic periodontitis, as well as osteomyelitis, a disease that affects the bone of the jaw.

Types

Independently determine the nature of the pimple that has popped up on the gum, you can not get, if you are not a dentist. However, you can determine approximately what type it refers to by method of elimination.

The following types of pimple on the gum occur:

  • Transparent pimples. Often accompanied by swollen mucosa, itching and increased lymph nodes, which together is a sign of herpetic stomatitis, the cause of which is the herpes virus.
  • White pimple on the gums. Represents a white or yellowish bump. In the absence of other symptoms of inflammation and normal general health, it may be a simple fatty spot.
  • Multiple pimples accompanied by a white plaque on the mucosa. If they are accompanied by itching and swelling, it is most likely a lesion of Candida fungus. This yeast-like fungus prefers to affect mucous membranes and can also cause soreness and muscle weakness.
  • A bloody or purulent pimple on the gum. Can be the result of bacterial stomatitis, which is often preceded by an injury to the mucosa in the mouth (due to braces, fish bone, etc.). An infection gets into the wound or scratch and stomatitis develops.
  • Cyst. Looks like a bump on the gum, being a dense pouch of periodontal tissue with pus inside. It can cause nagging pain or be virtually symptom-free. It can be caused by advanced gum inflammation, tooth decay, or diseases such as pulpitis and periodontitis. The size of the lump can reach several centimeters, its color is red, but when you press on the bump, the tissue turns white. Pressing and pressing unnecessarily is not worth it, you need to see a doctor sooner, as pus over time can destroy bone tissue.
  • Flux. This is an inflammatory process in the periosteum, called periostitis. It is manifested by a red or pronounced white pimple on the gum, combined with swelling. With flus, not only the gum but also the cheek is swollen.
  • Abscess. This is the next stage of a dangerous formation – a cyst, a flus, or a neglected purulent pimple on the gum. In this case, pus melts the tissue and forms a cavity. As a result, fistulas can appear – channels for pus to escape, which look like pimples ready to burst or holes, withdrawing purulent contents.

Possible Complications

Gum inflammation can lead to loose tooth retention and, therefore, loosening and falling out. But even this is not the main complication. If a pimple on the gum has become purulent, such an inflammatory process threatens the bone tissue. Osteomyelitis can occur, the advanced stage of which leads to jaw deformity and necrosis. In a particularly neglected situation, blood infection can occur, then the infection will spread throughout the body. In addition, purulent foci in the head area are especially dangerous – the infection can quickly reach the brain.

That is why it is so important to consult a doctor before starting treatment of masses on the oral mucosa. The opinion of a qualified specialist is especially important if a pimple on the gum is found in a child, because children’s bodies are particularly vulnerable.

Home Treatment of Pimple on the Gum

If the rash is caused by stomatitis or Candida fungus, the dentist may prescribe home treatment: regular mouthwash, treatment of the mucosa with special agents, taking medications. If the pimple on the gum was caused by a virus, then antiviral therapy will be prescribed.

In addition to the use of pharmacy remedies, the patient will need to follow general recommendations, namely, to adhere to a diet and a certain temperature of food during treatment.

From the diet will need to exclude:

  • hot and cold foods;
  • solid foods;
  • Spicy, sweet and sour foods and drinks;
  • fried foods.

All menus should be at room temperature or slightly warmer. Nothing should not irritate the mucous membrane excessively, so from soda and spicy sauces have to give up for a time. The patient waits a period of unloading on mashed potatoes, various porridges and other products permitted by the doctor.

If the pimple on the gum turned out to be a fatty lump, the doctor will initially appoint observation, since the lump can gradually resorb without surgical intervention. In some cases, when the fatty lump increases contrary to expectations, it will be surgically removed.

For stomatitis of different origin, different medications are prescribed. For candida – antifungal agents, for herpetic – antiviral drugs. To reduce pain and inflammation, antiseptic solutions for gargling and gels containing lidocaine and anti-inflammatory effects are used.

If the inflammation is severe, the doctor may prescribe a course of certain antibiotics.

Treatment in the Dental Clinic

With a purulent cyst, flus, and even more so an abscess, the help of a dental surgeon will be required. Surgery includes anesthesia, removal of the diseased tooth, if it was the source of infection, clearing the cavity of pus and antiseptic treatment. In osteomyelitis, the periosteum is often opened to remove the pus masses. After surgery, the patient will receive a course of antibiotics and antihistamines. In addition, treatment may include taking immunostimulatory drugs to help the weakened body recover from the infection.

In order not to bring the disease to this stage, it is necessary to consult a doctor in time. It is especially important to see a dentist immediately if you find a pimple on the gum of a child and do not start self-treatment without an official diagnosis and doctor’s recommendations.
