How Do I Know if My Toothache is Serious?

To determine if a toothache is serious, it is best to see a dentist. However, there are some signs to look out for. A toothache that lasts longer than 1 or 2 days, is severe, or is accompanied by a fever, earache, or pain while opening the mouth may indicate a serious problem.

Tooth sensitivity that persists for more than 30 seconds could also be a sign of gum disease, tooth decay, worn enamel, or fractured teeth.

If the pain is severe and lasts for more than 30 seconds, the cause is likely much more serious and could be due to tooth decay, fractures, or exposed roots.

The pain can feel sharp and sudden and may be worse at night, especially while lying down. If the tooth pain is accompanied by jaw or neck swelling or if the individual feels unwell with headaches or fatigue, emergency dental treatment is necessary.

It is important to seek treatment as an untreated infection in the tooth or elsewhere in the body can spread and potentially become life-threatening.
